Equalization The most critical aspects of mastering are in the use of equalization and compression (if needed) Equalization is used to make your music sound the best that it can. A critical listening environment and experienced ears allow a mastering engineer to hear and correct subtle tonal deficiencies. It also maybe desirable to change the tonal qualities of some of the song so there is a consistency in tonal character between all of the songsuris. |
|
Mastering In General Before you have your project duplicated on a CD make sure it is MASTERED. Mastering is the process of “polishing” your project. The mastering process has several aspects, ranging from simple to finely tuned in character. The simplest aspects of mastering are putting the songs in order, putting appropriate spacing between songs, and making sure the song starts and ends/fades are perfectly clean. |
Compression and Managing Dynamic Range The second thing that mastering can do is maximize the signal to noise ratio and get the music to play as loud as possible without distortion or clipping while still preserving the dynamic range of the music. There are many ways to accomplish this but most professional mastering engineers do this with the skillful use of compression along with the equalization.. |
|
Managing Volume Levels And Beyond Also making the relative volumes of each song consistent is important. It is not very professional to have to turn the volume up or down for every song on the album. Sample rate conversion may also be needed as part of the mastering. For some clients, mastering stops here, these are all the services they need. These steps are less time consuming and on a budget effectively take care of a number of problems. |
The Final Product As a result of this fine tuning of your CD it will be smoother and punchier and will be as loud as the other commercially released CDs that you purchase or download from a web provider. A good mastering engineer has a vast amount of experience and a number of different external hardware and software tools at his or her command and can make you project sound the best that it can sound. |
